Catching a Whiff
Come and join the Mapleton Public House and artist Lowana Davies at The Falls Farm for Catching a Whiff – a guided walking tour inviting you to follow your nose through the smells of Falls Farm.
This new work, created through a site-specific residency, is an amalgamation of science, sound, performance, and olfaction – where artist Lowana Davies will guide you through a suite of sensory surprises and delights, engaging with soils, orchards, gardens and in-conversations.
Including an auditory component, composer Tom Lyons and Lowana will explore the relationship between the olfactory and auditory qualities of the site. Their compositions will respond to a series of creative questions: What elements onsite hold both an olfactory and auditory resonance? What smells and sounds are disappearing? Informed by the Falls Farm site, the artists will connect the world of smell with the universe of sound.
The work seeks to inspire a deep connection to the environment through scent, aimed to deepen the embodied relationships we can have with our surroundings. It also looks at how creative practice can help us become more aware of the sensory impacts of the current climate crisis.
Catching a Whiff will be followed by the Supperclub Mapleton Dining Experience – a truly down-to-earth collaboration between exceptional chefs, dedicated regenerative farmers, and an artist hosted on the veranda tables, overlooking rolling countryside, at Mapleton Public House.

Lowana Davies
Lowana’s work examines how climate change reshapes sensory experiences, particularly the smellscape—the olfactory essence of landscapes. She explores how these shifts impact place, memory, and multispecies relationships through smellwalking, odour-wheels, fragrance-making, collaboration, writing, and performance.
As an olfactory, performance, and installation artist, her research-driven, site-responsive practice engages multispecies justice through intersectional feminist, queer, and pro-Indigenous perspectives. Her work has been presented in Australia, New Zealand, China, and Japan. She holds a Bachelor of Digital Media (QCA, Griffith University) and a Master of Philosophy in Creative Practice (QUT). She has created works for Festival 2018, HOTA, and Splendour in the Grass.
Ellamay Khongroj Fitzgerald
Ellamay Khongroj Fitzgerald is an artist based on Yugambeh Country. Her lens-based practice spans across photography, video and new media with an ongoing exploration into her dual Australian and Thai heritage. Ellamay's work is largely influenced by her lived experiences growing up bi-racial on the Gold Coast and perceptions of culture, identity and place as a second generation Asian Australian.
Courtenay McCue (CRT)
Visual artist and fashion designer CRT is the creative spark behind the costumes for ‘Catching a Whiff’, bringing her unique aesthetic to the visual design of the project. Combining inspiration from pop art and science fiction the costumes create an impactful visual identity for the work.
Rebecca Ross
As Program Producer of Generate GC, Rebecca Ross has supported the development of this project since inception. Rebecca brings myriad experience to the project having curated and produced the program at The Walls Art Space for nine years as well as projects for Festival 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Bleach Festival, Big City Lights, HOTA (Home of the Arts) and the Institute of Modern Art.
Tom Lyons
Tom is an experimental pianist, composer, and performer. The focusses of his work are jazz, improvisation, and extended piano techniques. Over the past 8 years, Tom and Lowana have collaborated on video, installation, and live performance projects that reimagine the body in space. During the residency at Falls Farm, Tom and Lowana will explore the relationship between the olfactory and auditory qualities of the site and create a cohesive response as part of a new body of site-responsive work for Horizon 2025.
