Homegrown – Local Artist Commissions

HOMEGROWN – LOCAL ARTISTS AT THE FRONT – SUBMISSIONS CLOSED

Horizon Festival, supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), is calling for submissions from established Sunshine Coast-based artists to present new or existing works as part of Homegrown 2021.

Through Homegrown, we are seeking contemporary live performance for presentation in our 2021 Festival (27 Aug – 5 Sep 2021).  Homegrown is designed to support the development and presentation of contemporary arts projects here in our region, and we invite submissions from established local artists working in visual arts, dance, theatre and music. Cross-artform or interdisciplinary proposals will also be considered.

The proposed work should consider presentation in public space/s and see the artist/s experimenting and pushing the boundaries of their creative practice.

Continuing on from a hugely successful Homegrown series in 2020, Homegrown 2021 will again place our local artists at the front, providing a platform for sharing the stories important to the people and places of the Sunshine Coast. Applying artists can propose collaborations with artists from outside of the local region including interstate and international, if this is critical to the project and feasible within budget and travel conditions.

A total of three (3) projects or works will be selected and presented as part of Horizon Festival 2021.

Presentation
Our intention is to bring audiences together for the Homegrown presentations, however artists must be flexible in the delivery of the events and work with Horizon Festival to meet any COVID-19 restrictions on events at the time of delivery.

The project, activity or experience can occur at any time during the 2021 Horizon Festival (27 Aug – 5 Sep). It can be a one-off event or presented more than once over the course of the Festival (e.g. every day at the same time). 

Funds + Support
Applicants can apply for up to $9,000 AUD per project. The amount requested must include all fees, materials, production costs and additional expenses. Horizon Festival will hold and manage a further $1,000 per project as contingency to cover costs such as unforeseen production expenses or costs associated with COVID-19 adaptation.

In addition to this financial investment, successful applicants will receive:

  • Valuable support from a Horizon Festival producer, who will work with you though the whole process of project planning and delivery.
  • Marketing support and guidance from the Horizon Festival marketing team; and
  • The opportunity to take up a Creative Spaces Residency and Space Travel Mentorship Program-as appropriate

Who can apply?
Horizon Festival welcomes applications from established artists across all art forms living and creating in the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area (LGA). Applying artists can propose collaborations with artists from outside of the local region including interstate and international, if this is critical to the project and feasible within budget and travel conditions.

We STRONGLY encourage submissions from Kabi Kabi and Jinibara artists and all people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

Selection Criteria

  • Applicant is a LGA Sunshine Coast resident
  • Artistic merit and project suitability for Horizon 2021
  • The work has a strong connection to place
  • The work aligns with the Horizon Festival vision to connect, delight and disrupt
  • The work must take place on the Sunshine Coast (in the Local Government Area of Sunshine Coast Council)
  • Project demonstrates viability, particularly around budget, timeframes and mode of delivery.

All applications for Homegrown are assessed by a panel with representatives from Horizon Festival and Creative Arts at Sunshine Coast Council.

FAQ’S

Can I apply for Homegrown if I live outside of the Sunshine Coast Council LGA?
If you live outside of the Sunshine Coast LGA, unfortunately you are unable to be the primary applicant for Homegrown. However, if you are collaborating with an artist who lives in the Sunshine Coast LGA, they can be the applicant for your project.

Can I work with artists outside the region?
Applying artists can propose collaborations with artists from outside of the local region including interstate and international, if this is critical to the project and feasible within budget and travel conditions.

Can I apply for additional funding for my project?
Yes you can, however you must be able to present the project within the $9,000 Homegrown budget. Additional funds can be used to amplify project outcomes, but the project cannot be reliant on any additional funds. Artists will need to advise Horizon Festival of any additional funding secured and can also provide Letters of Support to successful applicants.

If I was part of Homegrown 2020 can I apply for 2021?
Yes you can, however the project would be distinctly different from the project delivered as part of the 2020 program.

Homegrown is supported The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), a partnership between the Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
