Mooloolaba Beach is set to light up next weekend for New Year's Eve celebrations, with sculptural masterpiece and Horizon favourite, Zspyda, taking centre stage.
Zspyda - a 15m x 15m public art installation - is an original artwork of Sunshine Coast artist Lucas Salton and was commissioned by Maroochy Music and Visual Arts Festival (MMVAF) to be the visual arts centerpiece for their 2017 event. Inspired by David Bowie’s Spider from Mars, it is also an exploration of the concept of multi-faceted internet and metadata - ‘the inter webs’ as it were. As we participate in viewing the web, it too is viewing us. This sculpture is equally as attractive as it is threatening and is a must-see artwork. For NYE, the Zspyda will be rigged-up with lights and choreographed into a beach dance party and two fireworks displays.
If you missed Zspyda at MMVAF 2017, get along to Mooloolaba for New Year’s Eve and see Zspyda light up the beach between 7pm and 12:15am. If you want to bypass the excitement of NYE, you can also see Zspyda sans light-show from sun-up on Saturday 30 December 2017.
Big thanks to Horizon Event Partner MMVAF for commissioning such an incredible public art instillation. We cannot wait to see what new works are created for MMVAF 2018!
