Meet Dominic Hoey

Dominic Hoey is a poet, author and musician based in Auckland, New Zealand. He’s released five critically acclaimed studio albums two books of poetry, four short films and a best-selling novel, which was longlisted for an Ockham book award. In a former life, he was an MC battle and slam-poetry champion, and has performed his spoken-word poetry in Australia, Europe, England, Japan and America.

Get to know Dominic..

Can you take us through the first time you performed your poetry on stage? Where were you? Who was there? How did you feel?
I was 12 years old at a school poetry competition. I was super nervous as I'm dyslexic and anything with words freaked me out. It was in front of the whole school, but I ended up winning much to the surprise of myself and everyone else. It was the first time I realised how powerful words could be.

What is the number one piece of writing you think everyone needs to read?
The novel Days Without End, it has the most incredible sense of voice

Do you have any pre-performance rituals?
Stay soberish, stretch and walk in circles mumbling to myself

What inspires your writing?
A lot of my work centres around class politics, who gets to be in certain spaces and who isn't welcome. Especially in a medium like literature, that often thinks it's more lofty than it is. Also just the absurdity of life, dogs and love.

Who is your role model, and why?
My rescue pomeranian Prince Chilli. He's barely 3kgs and doesn't take shit from anyone

If you weren't a poet you would be…?
I hate to think. Still on the dole or flipping burgers.

The Bunker is hosting a special online Spoken Word open mic feature from Dominic, Zooming in from self-isolation in New Zealand. Check out at the details here.
