Local Artist Series // Nikita Newley
Who are you and what do you create?
My name is Nikita Newley and I’m the owner of New Dreaming Art. I’m a proud Wuthati-Darumbal woman born on Gurang Gurang country and now living on the Sunshine Coast Gubbi Gubbi country. I create acrylic paintings on canvas and other objects. I love bringing art into people’s homes by allowing them to have their story told with a contemporary twist. Also, I do workshops for all ages to teach history and knowledge of our art, people, and land.
What materials and techniques do you use?
I mainly use acrylic paint, but recently I have been very interested in mixed media and digital art. My technique changes but i mainly use uncontrolled brushes strokes with dot artwork over the top.
What kind of inspirations go into your work?
My connection to country and land. The elements of earth and outdoors inspire my creativity. I love using bright colours and layers.
In what space do you like to create most?
I need quite space and time. Music always helps too. It’s hard raising four kids and running a business. But when it flows it’s awesome I could paint forever!
What has been your favourite or most important work to date?
The painting I did for my son called Djalu — he is my first born so it’s very special. I do my work and learn my culture so I can pass on positive knowledge to him.
